Killer Didn't Say A Word To Vendor
posted (July 17, 2019)

And while Ampomah was the last murder last night - the first of the evening happened at 5:30.  As we told you last night, 53-year-old vendor Jose Hilario Diaz was killed yesterday at his used clothing store called New 2 U Shop.

That's located at the corner of Cemetery Road and Mosul Street, where a gunman strode up - in the middle of the evening rush hour in this much trafficked area - and didn't say a word or try to rob him: he just opened fire and shot him in the face.

So, it was an apparent execution but why?  Those we spoke to in the area say it may be a case of mistaken identity.  Police wouldn't go so far.   Here's what they know so far:

ASP Alejandro Cowo - OC, CIB Belize City
"Yesterday, likewise, just after 5 p.m., police were called out to Cemetery Road, where upon arrival; they visited #42 Cemetery Road. Inside of a small business establishment, just beside New Tuyul Shop, they saw the motionless body of a male person lying face-up, with an apparent gunshot wound to the body. They person was identified as Jose Elario Diaz, a Naturalized Belizean from a Vernon Street address. What police gathered so far is that Mr. Diaz was in his business establishment, when he was approached by a male person who fired a single shot at him, causing the above-mentioned injuries."

"Do you know whether or not words were exchanged between the two men?"

ASP Alejandro Cowo
"No, up to now, we can't establish if it's a robbery, or if it was another incident, as he still had his belongings on him."

Reporter
"Any security cameras, witnesses who may have seen the shooting?"

ASP Alejandro Cowo
"Police have spoken to several persons, and we are looking at different angles at this moment."

Police have one man detained for questioning.
