A Vigil for Allyson
posted (July 22, 2019)
Right now in downtown Belize City, the friends and family of Allyson Major Jr are having a candlelight vigil in his memory at the battlefield park.

The 36-year-old school teacher and father was killed by a police bullet last week Wednesday in downtown Belize City. It was the culmination of a high-speed pursuit through downtown Belize City - where Major was suspected of having a small quantity of marijuana. He had no weapon.

Since then the commissioner of police has acknowledged that police were wrong to open fire in that situation. A criminal investigation is underway.

And tonight his mother is saying that prayer and community support has been overwhelming so far, and that's why they've organized the event.

Yvonne Craig-Major, Mother of Deceased
"We decide to have a candle light vigil because we are God fearing people. That's first and foremost and I can attest to standing here is because I am a believer and the most high Jehovah God has gotten me. We believe because of all the overwhelming support that we have gotten from across the length and breadth of our country that it is only fitting to do something of this magnitude and I can assure you the support I cannot tell you how immense it is - everybody call, everybody visits and if they want for the record they can go on social media and see the magnitude of this. My son didn't deserve to be gun down like that. I call it execution. The type of weapon that was use. Right now I am out here, the Father has gotten me and I am ready for all the nice speakers that will come and deliver this evening."

"For you, you've had reassurances from the police and from the Ministry of National Security that they will conduct a thorough and impartial investigation against these officers. Are you assured that they will follow through with what they have promised?"

Yvonne Craig-Major, Mother of Deceased
"I am so happy that you ask me that question, like I told my family members, the friends, the sympathizers for me I don't even care if they arrest somebody. I dont even care if a charge came up on an individual. You know why? The Lord say in the bible vengeance is mine. I am not looking for any judgement any justification down here from man. The only government I support is Jehova's government."

Geovannie Brackett, Family friend
"Allyson and I have been friends for many years from we were young youth and this family Miss Major is my mother and my mother has only one son, she has only one son and my mother is Allyson's mother. It's very important not beyond symbolisms to host this. The theme that we choose is one too many. Miss Major choose that because it's one too many has been lost to gun violence. It's not just by police killing and this cause for reform both within the police department and from the political administration of the day and future administrations to look at gun violence and how it affects our society."
