Police Looking For Porfirio’s Killer
posted (July 25, 2019)
On Tuesday's news, we told you about 65-year-old Porfilio Nino, the farmer who was murdered and buried on his farm, in the Maya Mopan area.

His daughter reported him missing on Sunday after she couldn't reach him by cell phone on Saturday night. She was worried sick about him, and on Tuesday afternoon, her worst fears were confirmed when his body was found buried in a shallow grave. A post-mortem has confirmed that he died from blunt force injuries to the head.

His family also found a note, believed to be written by him, and this letter reportedly points to a person with whom he'd had a dispute. He reportedly wrote in that note that that if anything should happen to him, that person should be treated as a suspect.

This morning's police press briefing was the media's first opportunity to question police about their ongoing investigations, and here's what they told us about the case:

ACP Joseph Myvette - Head, NCIB
"Monday, Belmopan police received a report of a missing person of Porfilio Nino, a 65-year-old Naturalized Belizean of a San Martin area Belmopan address. What we know so far is that Mr. Nino's daughter made a report to police on Monday that she last spoke to him on Saturday, and when she last spoke to him on Sunday, there was no response. So, as a result, she visited the station on Monday, officers accompanied family members to conduct a search of the farm. And in so doing, somewhere around approximately 125 from the farm hut, police discovered a prosthetic leg believed to have been for Mr. Nino. As a result, the scene was processed, and further searches were conducted by police on family members on Tuesday, where whilst searching an area about a 100 yards from the farm hut, in some bushes, a shallow grave was discovered, [and] where, when dug up, it revealed the body of Porfilio Nino, in a state of decomposition."

"As a result, the scene was again processed, where the body was exhumed, and removed from the area, where a post-mortem was conducted, which revealed, in short, that he died from blunt-force trauma to the head. So far, there are several persons in custody pending this investigation."

Reporter
"While it is that the victim died from blunt-force trauma to the head, we were also told that other injuries, visible on the body, were that of stab wounds."

ACP Joseph Myvette
"Yes, he had several stab wounds behind the area of his neck, however, those seemingly did not contribute to his death."

Discussing the information in that letter, Assistant Police Commissioner Myvette told us that they want to be sure that Nino wrote it by trying to determine if it is indeed his handwriting.
