City Hall Shows Some Love
posted (July 29, 2019)
If you passed by the Swift Hall in the Lake Independence area of Belize City today, you would have definitely noticed the crowds of women and children who were there.

These were there for a generous back-to-school pantry program run by the Belize City Council, in collaboration with the American Christian Outreach mission called, Brothers And Sisters Ministries.

Brothers and Sisters has chosen Belize as the country where it wants to spread a little generosity to impoverished communities.

We stopped by this afternoon, and spoke with the Belize City Councillor responsible for Woman and Children about it:...

Dr. Candice Pitts - Councillor, Belize City
"Second annual Back to School Pantry initiative, which is sponsored by the Belize City Council, and Sisters and Brothers Ministries, which is a Christian-based organization out of Florida. Last year was the first year that we were able to partner with S&B Ministries to provide close to 500 book bags, and school supplies, as well as pantry, clothing, footwear, hygiene products to some of the residents who are most in need in this City. This is the second year, and the program has expanded. We have close to 800 book bags, and back-to-school supplies, likewise footwear, clothing, food, and hygiene products that we will provide to the residents of the city who are most in need."

"The people were very appreciative of the program. It's not just giving them bookbags, food, and clothing, but it's a really a family event. S&B Ministries start out with a worship session. They break the group up into children and adults and provide some life skills to the parents, and some fun activities for the children."

"S&B Ministries, they have been providing these kinds of services before they partnered with us. We're really appreciative that they had chosen to partner with us, and that they have chosen Belize as the place that they want to render this service. They could have chosen any other country, but they decided to choose Belize, and they're partnering with the Belize City Council. This is not a political initiative."

"We help to provide the platform to reach more people in the City for them, and hopefully, we're doing a really good job, trying to reach those residents who are most in need of this service that offers a little bit of relief in these economic trying times for many families."

As you heard, this is the second year of the program.
