Near Fatal Shooting On Busy Street
posted (August 1, 2019)
And from those murders in the Belize and Cayo Districts, we turn now to a near-fatal shooting in Belize City involving a 27-year-old man from Arlington Drive.

The victim is Rafael Usher, and tonight, he's clinging to life at the KHMH after suffering gunshot injuries to the left thigh, the right buttocks, and the left side of his abdomen. Reports are that sometime around 8:00 last night, Usher was walking on Central American Boulevard, and as soon as he passed the 88 Better Living store, he was about to turn into Arlington Drive, which is where his family's home is located.

He didn't make it far, however, because 2 unknown men on motorcycles rode up on him. One of them pulled out a gun, fired several shots at him, and the duo sped off. Usher was left injured, and bleeding on the street. Bystanders put him into a police mobile and rushed him to the KHMH.

We spoke with his father today, and he told us that Usher was on his way back from complying with his parole requirements as a former prison inmate. Usher's father told us that they believe that these men were tracking his movements before they attacked:

Donald Usher - Father of Shooting Victim
"I was working last night, and I got a phone call that my son got shot up. So, I went to the morgue, and the doctors told me that he lost - the first thing that he lost was a kidney. Then after the kidney, they took him into surgery, and when they came back out, they said his insides are kind of messed up."

"He was on parole, he went to parole, and he signed off. When he was coming back home - I heard coming back home, when he reached Arlington Drive, where he lives, they say that he rode right up to the gunman, and the guy just shot him up."

Reporter
"So, you all think that this person was waiting for him to come home?"

Donald Usher
"Yeah, yeah."

Reporter
"They were stalking him."

Donald Usher
"Oh yes, they dodged him."

"The intensive care, he was there, lying down, and you could see like he was fighting for his breath. So, we decided that we would go back today, and see what the doctors have to say."

"Those injuries, well, he's critical right now. He's critical."

Reporter
"Are you expecting or hoping that he'll make it?"

Donald Usher
"Well, I have faith. I have faith in God. So, I just have to leave it in God's hands."

Reporter
"Are the doctors hopeful? What sort of advice are they giving?"

Donald Usher
"Last night, the doctor told me that this is the first time he saw a bullet wound like this, and he said that the insides are in bad shape."
