Swing Bridge Accident Brought Into Clearer View
posted (August 7, 2019)

Yesterday we brought you the story of the vehicle that went head first into the Belize river and rested for a time under the depths of the Harbour.

Fortunately no life was lost, and there were many colorful accounts of just what happened - but today, a surveillance video gave us the most accurate account.  Chereese Halsall did a re-take:

An eyewitness told us what he saw:

Ramon Salgado - Driver, Jeep Cherokee
"When I look I saw the vehicle coming from straight across with speed and apparently it couldn't stop, because a guy was coming off the bridge with a motor bike and he was trying to avoid being hit."

But, surveillance video shows, the motorbike was not coming down the swing bridge but was in fact coming down North Front street and turning left onto the swing bridge - the same direction as Jasmine Smith's Kia Sportage.

But her vehicle was moving so fast, it barrelled over the motorbike - sending the rider Cordel Baptist flying to the pavement.

Baptist received a large cut wound to the leg, but if he didn't get out of the way as quickly as he did, he could been run over.

As the footage shows it was a runaway Kia at a busy intersection and, luckily, the only casualty was this SUV.

And while no life was lost in that accident - we are told a man has died after he was knocked down by a sand truck near Benny's roundabout on the Northern Highway this evening. The victim was thrown to the pavement by the impact and survived the impact, but reportedly died a short time ago.  More on this tomorrow.
