posted (August 8, 2019)
The police and coast guard are still looking for Dangriga fisherman Derrick Ramirez. As we told you last night, on Sunday afternoon, Ramirez, his brother and other relatives went on a fishing trip near Cross Caye. A group of rival fishermen approached them and tried to chase them off. Ramirez and his crew complied but as they were packing up at their camp, the fishermen returned and opened fire. That is when Ramirez ran off into the mangroves. There is still no sign of Ramirez at this point. Police gave us the information they have so far.

ACP Joseph Myvett
"He reported that on Sunday last sometime shortly after 2pm whilst himself, his brother Derrick Ramirez and another family relative were diving in the area some half a mile south of Cross Caye. they were approached by 3 male persons in a boat who then told them that they needed to leave the area. As a result they cooperated and left the area to Cross Caye where whilst in the process of packing up their equipment the vessel then return to Cross Caye where they were with the same 3 male persons on board who then alighted the vessel and came on to Cross Caye where they confronted Derrick Ramirez and one of those persons who was armed fired several shots at him. As a result, Ramirez in order to escape ran into the direction of some mangroves. those persons then pursued him and later returned a few minutes and got back into their vessels. Hernandez along with his other companion then visited the area where Ramirez has ran and conducted searches. However, they were unable to locate him and it was not until Tuesday that this report was made to the police."

"Police and coast guard have since been in the area since the report was made yesterday and today, police and coast guard are in the area, combing the area in order to try and locate Derrick Ramirez."

Reporter
"Sir have you found anything to indicate what may have happened out there?"

ACP Joseph Myvett
"At this point in time, no. We have not found any other than to say that those persons did approach Ramirez and one of those persons fired shots at Ramirez causing him to run from the area."

Reporter
"Sir what do you make of that report given by those friends? The family is alleging that he may have been set up, lured out there and murdered."

ACP Joseph Myvett
"I will say that the police has not gotten that information and if you go back to the briefing that was given you will see that he was along with his brother."

Police say they have not gotten any report of a 'beef' or misunderstanding among the men. Police are looking for one man they know only by his alias.
