The Plan For Marine Litter in Belize
posted (August 9, 2019)
A plan is almost in place to address litter in Belize's Marine areas. The project seems to have great support from both public and private sector as they work together to ensure its success. These efforts were further bolstered by a UK team which traveled to Belize in April to consult on the process. The document generated from that consultation awaits G.O.B. approval.

The government press office spoke to environmental officer Maxine Monsanto about how Belize's litter action plan will help our country to do its part for marine health in the region.

Maxine Monsanto, Environmental officer - Department of the environment
"Today is the last stage in the development of the marine litter action plan. This process began in April with the center for environment fisheries aquaculture science from the UK government and what they did then was research, from the research they developed policy papers which then led to targeted group meetings and one on one sessions with stakeholders. We then held a national workshop and today we are validating the document that came out of that national workshop."

"After the validation with these stakeholders the document gets completely finalized and we submit it for endorsement to cabinet. If the government endorses and adopts the document we move towards a launching and publication in September just in time for our regional high level dialogue in Marine litter, which Belize is hosting with the UK government."

"The event in September is designed to bring together ministers of environment and high level officials in environment to address issues of marine litter. We'll be discussing waste and the in the marine environment to address issues of marine litter we'll we discussing waste in the marine environment. And high level officials in environment to address issues of marine litter we'll be discussing waste in the marine environment, waste collection, outreach, funding how to address marine litter specifically plastics microplastics and macroplastics."
