Sister Killed Sister Case Falls Apart
posted (August 14, 2019)

Last year in November, we told you about the case out of Independence Village, where 23-year-old Isela Cano was criminally charged for the death of her big sister, 27-year-old Keidi Yesenia Ramirez. Police believed that she should face consequences for the death of her sister, but DPP Cheryl-Lynn Vidal disagrees with them.

As we told you, post-mortem results showed that Ramirez had damage to her pancreas, which is consistent with sustaining traumatic blows to the abdomen area.

Her family rushed her to the Independence Polyclinic because she was unresponsive. She was pronounced dead, and the on-duty doctor reportedly showed police injuries to her neck, both hands, and feet. When police questioned her parents, and her sister, Isela, they told police that there was an angry dispute. Reports to 7News were that the family’s dispute was about Ramirez’s 74-year-old boyfriend. They accused her of carrying on with a relationship behind his back, and there were threats to expose her. Ramirez had allegedly been drinking. So, it appeared that to restrain her, her family tied her down, and gagged her.

The next thing the family discovered was that she was unresponsive, and that’s when they rushed her to the clinic.

Several days later, police charged Cano with manslaughter, reportedly at the advice of the DPP, but she later inquired with us about the police’s account, saying that she didn’t give any such directive. Nevertheless, she was arraigned, and her attorney, Hurl Hamilton, was able to get her Supreme Court bail.

At an adjournment of the case today, Cano and her attorney showed up for the court hearing, expecting to learn what progress the prosecution had made to get closer to her trial date. But instead, the police prosecutor told the court that he had received a directive from the DPP’s Office to withdraw the charge.

That was done, and Cano was allowed to leave court completely free.
