Police Looking Deeply Into Belmopan Rape
posted (August 15, 2019)
And, back now to police news, one other case that Assistant Commissioner Joseph Myvette discussed in today's press briefing was the rape allegation out of Belmopan.

As we told you, a 38-year-old woman reported to police that on Monday night, she was at a party in the Tiger Town area of the Capital City. When she engaged in a conversation with one of the party-goers, he allegedly lured her into one of the bedrooms.

She claims that he then forced himself on her and raped her, and before she could get herself together and escape, one of his friends entered the room and he then allegedly raped her.

Police have since arrested and charged 23-year-old Devin Peyrefitte, aka "DJ Perf", and 21-year-old Denzel Usher for the crime of rape. Their families are disputing this woman's account of what happened, and so today, we asked the police for a bit of clarity on the case. Here's what ACP Myvette had to say this morning:

ACP Joseph Myvette - Head, NICB
"On Monday, sometime around 2 p.m., a 38 year-old woman visited the Belmopan Police Station and reported that earlier that same day, sometime around 1 a.m., she was at a social function within Belmopan, where she was invited into a home, and 2 male persons who were at that function had sexual intercourse with her against her will. Police have since conducted an investigation, where they have since arrested and charged Devin Peyrefitte, 24 years of a Belmopan address, and Denzel Usher, 23-year-old, also of a Belmopan area, for the crime of rape."

Reporter
"What can you - are you willing to share any information on the medical. One of the families of the accused persons is disputing the results, suggesting it does not show that sex was forced upon her."

ACP Joseph Myvette
"Actually, I would think that that person would need to go to the law as to the definition of rape, which is pretty much saying the penetration of another person's mouth, vagina, or anus without their consent. And it could be the slightest degree of penetration. So, obviously, that person would need to refer to the law."

Both men have since been arraigned and remanded to the Belize Central Prison.

And a clarification to what we reported last night, Usher's family has contacted the press to assert that they never said that the complainant gave consent to sex with him. They are in fact asserting that sex between the 2 never happened.
