Judges In The Jungle
posted (August 19, 2019)
The Friends For Conservation and Development (FCD), which co-manages the Chiquibul National Park, had a very special visit last week. Members of the judiciary spent 2 days with them and learned first-hand about the difficulties of trying to preserve the Chiquibul Forest.

On August 16th and 17th, Chief Justice Kenneth Benjamin, Chief Magistrate Sharon Frazer, 2 Supreme Court Judges, and 10 Magistrates made the trip to the Las Cuevas Research Station and then to Caracol. Once there, the FCD told them all about their conservation efforts over the last 11 years, since they entered into the co-management with the Government.

In 2007, the key threat to the Chiquibul was xate extraction, which later evolved into illegal logging, poaching, and encroachments in the Chiquibul for agricultural farming. Today's biggest threat are gold panning, cattle ranching, and illegal wildlife trafficking. One measure being implemented to address these concerns is environmental law and compliance, which the FCD is pushing along with its partner regulatory agencies.

Since persons caught conducting illegal activities in the Chiquibul eventually end up in front of a Magistrate, the FCD wanted to educate these members of the judiciary about the importance of their enforcement efforts. The itinerary involved site visits to the Rio Frio Caves, the Chiquibul Visitor Center, the Caracol temples, as well as trekking to the Tower Lookout, Las Cuevas Maya temples and illegal logging area on the A10 Road. The members of the judiciary even participated in a night walk on the San Pastor Road.

They then advised the FCD on improvements that they can make to strengthen the evidence they submit in court.
