The National Gas Company which got the green light in the House of Representatives last week Friday is coming under scrutiny tonight.
As we told you, the company is a public private partnership, a state-protected monopoly which will supply all the LPG - or what we call butane to Belize. It's a major shift from the Mexican supplier which owns all the major butane companies.
But at what cost? Tonight, the Belize Business Bureau - which is very rarely heard from - has issued a scathing press release blasting the new company, and the National Liquified Petroleum Gas Project Bill which sets it up as a monopoly.
The release says, quote, "The government has decided to table a bill for the creation of a new monopoly which is regressive; places a monopoly tax on the poor; increases inequality; creates job losses and further unemployment...". End quote.
The release adds, quote, "what was needed was a competition law to allow for more distributors, stronger standards and regulatory penalties for price gouging." End quote.
