Do Marijuana Movements Cause Murders?
posted (August 21, 2019)
And, while Meredith says his weed was for medical purposes; the fact is, trafficking marijuana is big business across Belize. In the past two months, police have found large amounts stowed in the Belize district - most recently Scotland Half Moon - where almost 40 pounds were found last Friday.

And while possession of 10 grams or less is legal, trafficking is not legal in any quantity. And wherever drugs are trafficked, large sums of money are involved.

When busts are made, those large sums of illicit monies are lost, and - often - persons involved in the trade, get killed.

We asked the Commissioner today how weed fuels violence:

Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police
"We have been doing a lot to intercept drugs coming into our country both in the air, on the road and with the work of the coast guard on the seas. And we have seen a number of murders and even circumstances where persons receive serious bodily harm resulting from the sale of drugs. You will recall the last murder we had on New Road, that was drug related and the person was killed over an area for the sale of drugs. So the drugs sale is a problem to us and we are trying to find ways and means where we can address these issues and one way we can do so is to stop the drugs coming into our country and especially the city where the circumstances are more prevalent."

Reporter
"Was the Lord's Bank murder related to any of these big busts?"

Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police
"I don't want to speculate, so I will leave that at that."
