Cab Secss Son Gets Student Debt Write-off From Parliament
posted (August 21, 2019)
Every so often, the Minister of Finance has to take write off motions to the house. That is where government has irrecoverably lost an asset or funds, and must write it off. But, it cannot do so without parliament's approval.

The write off's don't usually attract much attention or controversy, but one of them from Friday's meeting did.

That's because it was a write off for a student loan to Cabinet Secretary Carlos Perdomo's son. Here's the reading of this write off:

Of course, Cabinet's recommendation could not be signified - one assumes without the knowledge of the Cabinet secretary, who is Joshua Perdomo's father.

Today, the PUP's Belize Youth Movement sent out a release, blasting the write-off. It says, quote, "This $40,000.00 write-off further highlights the rampant corruption and nepotism that is rotting at the core of this administration…The BYM demands the immediate retraction of this write-off..." End quote. We note that when the motion was passed, the PUP members made nothing of it.
