Play Named Wake is "Woke"
posted (August 21, 2019)
If you're a fan of the theater you won't want to miss the premiere of Wake, a play written and directed by Joseph Stamp Romero. This is the 6th production organized through Romero's Youth Advocacy through Arts program, an organization that seeks to create social change through the arts.

Azizi Hoy who plays Nadia in this weekend's production stopped by our studio to tell us about the play and why it's extremely relevant to the modern Belizean experience.

"So you already heard Wake before. When we have funerals we tend to have wakes before it. This play primarily focuses on the Wake and on Wakes we tend to have a lot of tension a lot of drama especially when family comes together. So this is the problem here is that we have a Garifuna family but we have the grandmother and the grandfather. The grandmother started her views that her family should stay the same, it shouldn't mix. There shouldn't be a cultural mix and in this new age we're seeing that there is a lot of cultural mixes. So, with this idea set in her head her husband the grandfather continues this trend."

"So it's a whole drama about should we continue in the style of the grandmother who says: "culture should stay within culture, we shouldn't mix." or will we continue with the new age where we're noticing that were very diverse because Belize is diverse."

"Apart from the seriousness from the play, we also have a comedic aspect to it. So we'll go through the motions of seriousness of feeling the moment, but we'll bring it all down by making you all laugh. It will be extremely funny and something the entire family could enjoy."

"Well We're going to try to highlight like some songs just to add the mood to it and just so it's known to the people but it's something that you have to be there to see and experience so that you can also feel the culture in the play. That's why i'm asking for all Belizeans to really come out and support us because this is a movement we're starting through YATA and it really helps our young people it's a movement that was started by Joesph Stamp Romero and it helps young people to be more positive, do more positive things through art."

Wake will be presented on Friday August 23rd and Saturday August 24th at 7:00 at the Bliss Institute for the performing arts.
