A New Bridge to Neulands
posted (August 29, 2019)

The bridge between the Mennonite Community of Neulands and Santa Martha in Orange Walk East is probably one of the least known crossings in wider Belize.

But, in that agricultural area it plays a crucial role, and, for decades, the only crossing was a rickety and precarious wooden bridge.  That has now been replaced with a sturdy concrete structure, and here’s what residents said about it yesterday:…

Maria Herrarte - Santa Martha Villager
"It's very important, the bridge and the road we really need because everyone has to pass on this bridge to their jobs."

Reporter
"Why do people go to Newlands?"

Maria Herrarte
"Because Neulands is a community, the people work taking to Orange Walk Mennonites back and forth."

Jada Wade - Maskall Villager
"The recent bridge that was taken down was a wooden structure which was very unsafe and it was very fragile. Here at Santa Martha there are many farmers and they rely on this bridge constantly and they do have jobs with Mennonites across this bridge and I think to them it's very important and it's an essential part of their job."

Hon. Elodio Aragon - Area Rep.
"It's important and it's going to become even more important because this road takes you right down to the sea and the sea basically after you pass Neulands, it takes you right to the sea which is directly in front of San Pedro."
