The War of the Worlds Over LPG Private Public Partnership
posted (August 30, 2019)

Another Bill that sparked quite a bit of back and forth at the Senate today is the National Liquified Petroleum Gas Project Bill.

It was tabled at the last House meeting 2 weeks ago, and the model being proposed in this bill is a public-private partnership, where the state would protect a monopoly on the supply of LPG, which we know better as butane.

The project proposes that a new entity, which is called the National Gas Company, will take over the responsibility to supply the entire country with butane. It will be a major shift from the current state of affairs where one Mexican supplier owns all the major butane companies in the country.

This project envisions a new supply mechanism where the National Gas Company will ship LPG to a bulk port facility in Belize, which should, in theory, bring down the transportation cost. They will be given a 15-year-term of license to supply butane, and they will build 3 facilities, which will be handed over to the Government when the license ends. Here's what the Senators had to about this project during today's debate on it:

This bill, as well as the others, all passed in the Senate today. The bills and the loan motions will become law when the Governor-General gives his ascent.
