Lawless Coast Guardsman?
posted (September 2, 2019)
Tonight, Belmopan police have an officer from the Belize Coast Guard in custody. That's after he allegedly barged into the Teul family home in the San Martin area, threatened several of the members, fired a live round from an unlicensed firearm, and struck one of the female residents with the gun.

It happened this morning at around 8:00. It appears that this accused man has an ongoing dispute with several members of the family, and so, he reportedly went to their home, which is when the scary assault reportedly played out.

Our colleagues from Plus TV attempted to speak with the family, and the topic was brought up this afternoon at the police press conference. Here's what they both had to say about the incident:

"I got a phone call from my nephew this morning around 8am, because I was getting ready to go to work and then he told me to hurry go and see him mom, because this person Brian wanted to shoot at them and that he hit my sister on her head and then I got frightened, so then I came to see her and then I saw my sister bleeding. I ask what had happened and they told me that Brian wanted to shoot her for no reason. But later on I got to understand that this Brian had an argument with my brother the night before and it look like this person was so anger at my brother that he wanted to take out his anger, so he reached this morning and he went to do my sister that. My sister said that he pointed the gun at her to shoot her to make my brother see that this is a lesson that my brother do not mess with him - and that he is not afraid for anyone. We know Brian for a long time. It look like they started to argue and then Brian come in the yard and then he hold my sister and he knock her on her head with the gun. My sister yelled for her son and he came and say Brian had his arms around my sister neck and then my nephew got a stone to defend his mom and then Brian let go my sister and then he turned to shoot my nephew and he hid himself in the shop and then Brian went."

ACP Joseph Myvette - Head, NCIB
"This morning, shortly after 8 a.m., Belmopan police was called to the San Martin area, to the home of one Christina Teul, who reported to police that shortly before 8, whilst at her home, she was approached by one Brian Orellano, who she knows to be a Coast Guard Officer. Several exchanges of words occurred, where Orellano then took out a handgun and hit her to the left side of her head. One of her sons tried to intervene, and Orellano then fired one single shot in the air before departing the area. He is now in police custody, pending charges in relation to this incident."

"Has it been established if it was a licensed firearm, in this particular case?"

ACP Joseph Myvette
"No, it's not, and it was not a Coast Guard issued weapon."

Reporter
"Were they in a relationship?"

ACP Joseph Myvette
"Obviously, what the police learned so far, is that Mr. Orellano had an issue with one of Mrs. Teul's family, prior to the incident."

Reporter
"Can we safely say that firearm charges will be proffered against him?"

ACP Joseph Myvette
"Well, firearm charges can only be proffered against you when those firearms are found. And in this case, the firearm has not been found."

Police have not said when they intend to charge this accused, and what the charges will be.
