Weed Pushing Through Estero

In our headline - we told you about the dangerous situation that unfolded in San Victor village in the Corozal district today when the Police Anti Narcotics Unit tried to intercept a shipment of contraband.  

And the narcotics unit is active in the area because right now - Corozal is the main entry point for high grade marijuana from Mexico.  

And another hot spot border crossing is Estero - just outside Patchakan.  

Last night after 7:00 police in that area searched a green Chrysler van. The occupants of the van have been confirmed to be 33 Year old Jose Concha and 23 year old Elias Lopez. Both men and the vehicle were escorted to the police station where police found 16.6 kilos or 36 pounds of marijuana. Police told us more today.

"Shortly after 7 P.M., police under patrol in the Patchakan area observed a green Chrysler van in the area bearing San Ignacio license plates, as a result those person were approached by the police who were the occupants of the vehicle, where they were informed that the police will conduct a search on the vehicle. As a result the vehicle was then escorted to the Corozal Police Station compound where a thorough search was conducted which resulted in the discovery of 10 parcels of suspected cannabis wrapped in clear plastic which when weighed amounted to 3,682 grams. Those 2 persons who are detained pending this investigation are from San Ignacio and are expected to be charged later today."

The two men appeared in court this afternoon. Concha pleaded guilty while Lopez pleaded not guilty to the charge. Ultimately Concha was fined $10,000 to be paid between today's date and April 20th 2020, in default of the fine he could spend up to 3 years in prison. The charge against Lopez was withdrawn.
