La Immaculada School Far from Immaculate but...Getting There
posted (September 11, 2019)
Today the classrooms at La Immaculada were pretty much full as students returned to school. As we have reported, the New River stench was just too unbearable for the kids and teachers so they had to cancel classes for a couples days last week. Well, it seems that being on the school grounds was manageable today. We dropped by the school and the principal Lenny Umana told us while it is a welcomed reprieve from the odor, they are remaining alert and monitoring the situation to ensure the comfort and well-being of the students and staff.

850 students showed up to school today out of the over one thousand students. In terms of safety procedures and back up plans, Umana told us that BNE has installed an alarm that will sound if there is a high level of harmful gases in the air. Fortunately, that has not happened. Umana also said that if the stench returns, they are looking at the option of starting classes earlier at 8am and dismissing the kids at earlier in the afternoon at 1:30 so they are not exposed to any harmful gasses or odors. The second back up plan is to postpone classes again and the third and final resort will be to relocate - which would not be the best or most efficient option.
