DOE Keeping a Close Eye on Aerators in New River
posted (September 11, 2019)
Personnel from the Department of the Environment were also on the ground today in Orange Walk checking on their aerators. According to environmental officer Anthony Mai, since they installed the aerators, they have been seeing some slight improvements in the water on the surface. But they still have to observe and monitor the effects of the aerators in the water. Here is more from Mai.

Anthony Mai, Environmental Officer - DOE
"Immediately we realized that it showed some improvement in terms of the clarity of the water. The top layer is cleared up a bit and so the plan now is to install - we install this one yesterday on the 10th and then we are installing one today and we want to install a couple more throughout the day. We have them a distance a part so that we could monitor if there is any significant change. What we are doing is we monitor the water quality and the H2H level before we install the aerators and then when we install it we monitor the water column. We monitor every 20 feet, 15, 10, 5 and surface for various parameters. If you look at the aerator, it protrudes a bit into the river and so I would want to caution anyone that is using the river on a boat specifically at night to be mindful that we have these equipment on the river. The one at Baracas we installed a flashing light on it and we want to do the same for all the ones that we installed."

DOE will install more aerators in different areas along the New River.
