New River Task Force in Full Force
posted (September 12, 2019)

On Monday’s newscast, we showed you the pilot project that the Department of Environment is running to start the rehabilitation of the New River. They’ve placed surface aerators on strategic parts of the river most affected by the severe pollution afflicting it, and they’re trying to inject oxygen back into the water.

While that project runs its course the authorities are exploring other means of trying to restore the river. Today, the Â Rehabilitation of the New river Task Force met today. The members of the task force were updated by the DOE personnel on all the works done so far to try to improve the new river’s condition.

We’re told that the River is showing significant improvement with respect to its oxygen levels, as a result of the mechanical aerators. More to be installed, and as a matter of fact, one was installed today at Jim's Pool in Tower Hill.

Also, the poisonous hydrogen sulfide levels have lowered, and the river’s foul smell has been reduced.

A command center was opened and staffed in Orange Walk Town. The Ministry of Health and other personnel are now working closely to identify possible pollution sources and monitor their activities and find ways to minimize their impact on the river.
