The Answers Are on the Screen: Immigration Dept. Gets New TV's
posted (September 12, 2019)

Today the International Organization for Migration donated $3,000 US dollars worth of flat screen televisions to the Immigration department. Now these TV's aren't for the immigration officers and staff to crack back and watch movies, they will be set up at borders countrywide showing information about a migration app that you can download on your phone and other relevant information for travelers. The handing over ceremony was held at the Philip Goldson International Airport where one of the television screens was installed. Here is more from the ceremony.

Edmond Zuniga - CEO, Immigration and Refugees
"Today the IOM, the International Organization for Migration is handing over 5 televisions which we will be using for infomercials that have mainly to do with immigration matters for right now, one will be set up here at the Phillip Goldson International Airport and the others will be set up at the different stations at the border points. The information that we are putting mainly on the television screens have to do with arriving passengers so they know what to expect when they arrive, they know the information they need to provide and more so it is going to help to inform persons about signs of human trafficking and human smuggling that they must look out. It is an excellent donation, we have some limited information being passed to the public but this is definitely going to enhance our information passage."

Marcelo Pisani - Regional Director, IOM
"Well information in terms of supporting and decreasing the vulnerabilities of migrants is very important so we are donating the screen but in fact at the end of the day the screens are an instrument, the importance is the information we will put in the screens. This is part of a more comprehensive project that we have with the government of Belize."

"Can you talk to us about that project a bit more?"

Marcelo Pisani
"Well the idea is to strengthen the capacity of the project to protect migrants to fight against trafficking and smuggling to provide the suitable information so they can make decisions knowing what are the legal means to migrate."

The 6 minute video is in English, Spanish and Mandarin. The other television screens will be installed at the Northern border in Corozal, one in PG and one at the Immigration office in Belmopan.
