Human Smuggling: A Complex Issue

We report on many cases of human smuggling where authorities intercept caravans of migrants who illegally enter the country. Well the immigration department have to deal directly with these cases and CEO Zuniga says it is a challenge because the number of cases are increasing.

"We are a member of the A-Tips committee headed by the Ministry of Human Development and they work jointly with the police getting information and dealing with issue of human trafficking, smuggling is a matter for immigration because it is people coming into the country illegally and so we do arrest and detain and take people to court or order them to leave depending on what might be the case."

"Has there been an increased number of human smuggling cases?"

"Yes we believe so, we are seeing more and more people coming not just from Central America but from other regions trying to transit Belize."
