Civic Tragedy, Groups Call For OSH Standards
posted (September 16, 2019)
On Friday we told you about the two men who were killed and four injured when the platform of the scaffolding which they were working on gave way. They weren't wearing harnesses.

This evening, the Ministry of Labour issued a statement expressing their regret at the loss of life and the injuries caused as a result of the accident. They assured the public that they remain committed to ensuring that legislation for Occupational Safety and Health or OSH - is enacted, implemented and monitored for all workers in Belize.

The National Trade Union Congress of Belize and the PUP also issued statements calling the incident unnecessary and avoidable.

The NTUCB reminded all employers that they owe a duty of care to their employees to provide a safe environment in which to work each day. They demanded that a full unbiased investigation be conducted by the Police department and further enquiry be coordinated by the Belize Infrastructure Limited. They say that before this preventable accident the NTUCB had already sent correspondences to the Chamber of Commerce to get back to the discussion table to address concerns with the OSH Bill.

The PUP asked for questions to be raised and persons held responsible. They also called for a proper investigation into the accident at the Civic Center and joined in the perspective that there is a critical need for the Occupational Safety and Health Bill to be revisited

All three statements sent thoughts and prayers to the four men recovering from the accident.
