posted (September 17, 2019)
In attempting to find out whether Delnox Belize is offering adequate compensation to the workers that survived the Civic accident; 7 News reached out to Chandra Nisbet Cansino, the general manager of policy and programs at the Social Security Board.

She wasn't able to comment on the specifics of the case due to the ongoing investigations, however, she spoke at length about how the SSB handles workplace injuries and its full support for the passing of the Occupational Health and Safety Bill.

Chandra Nisbet Cansino, General Manager , Policy and Programs SSB
"At this time the investigations are ongoing and we would like to take the opportunity also to remind workers that if they are unable to make a claim due to hospitalization or in this unfortunate instance death. Then someone can make a claim on their behalf because under our Social Security regulations a claim is made initially, and thereafter Social Security conducts and investigation to determine insurability. To be covered for employment injury your accident would have to have occurred during and out of the course of insurable employment."

"It has been a topic of great concern ever since the drafting of the Occupational Safety and Health legislation Social Security has been a part of that and in a lot of cases for a few years we had taken the lead. A lot of the meetings took place at the Belize City branch office. We brought in a legal draftsman to ensure that the legislation was drafted. We met for quite a few years with all the partners involved. Social Security has always been a part of that process. Going forward we are made to understand that there is plan to continue with this discussion of the OSH act. I think the Chamber and unions have some concerns."

Act 1 of the First Schedule of the Social Security Act states that; " In general, every employment under a contract of service or apprenticeship, written or oral , is considered insurable employment."
