The Price Century
posted (September 18, 2019)
On Saturday, Belizeans will celebrate the 38th anniversary of our country's Independence. And, if he was still alive, National Hero George Price, the man credited with leading the country to our Independence, would have celebrated birthday number 100 earlier this year.

So, in observance of his importance as the Father of the Nation, the student body of Saint John's College, his alma mater, has created an art exhibit to pay its respects. They've put together photographs and texts from some of his most well-known speeches. Also, over 200 students each took the same photograph of Price's likeness, and they've put their personal artistic touch on it, which has now been organized into one big mural.

The school invited the press to observe the unveiling of this exhibit, as well as the School's History Club's newest teaching tool, called Dajeel Taan. Here's what their teacher Yasser Musa told us about the initiative this evening:

Yasser Musa - History/Art Teacher, SJC
"Today, we launched 2 major actions. First, we launched Dajeel Taan, which is a Youtube channel project where we will be recording from today and going forward, all the various encounters that we have when guests come to talk at our history club, other activities that, and we post it because we know that is a very easy way for our students to be engaged with the contents that we're developing. The second thing as an action that we developed today is the launch of the #George Price 100, which is a celebratory exhibit, designed by students of the junior college, where a special feature of that exhibit an artwork, a mural. An icon of Price was designed by Carlos Lito Quiroz, and we printed 200 copies and gave it to students from first to 4th farm, junior college students, and students that we teach at the Wagners Facility at the Kolbe Foundation. And they all interpreted that image of price. We joined in a mural, and that is what you see as the central feature. In addition to the mural, created by the students, we also have some very vintage photographs, including an image of Price's 1933 certificate of merit from Saint John's College, including some important photos taking by Noris Hall, 1973, 74, in the heat of Price pricing pushing with the support of the Belizean people toward Independence. And we have some key elements of speeches and text. So it is a combination of art, photography, and text."

"The mural, sir, from the different students, what are your thoughts on the artistic designs they've chosen."

Yasser Musa
"I like to look at people looking at it because I, obviously from an artist's standpoint, feel magic. And I connect that mural to what Kyraan Gabourel, Kyo the Assassin, the poem that he delivers. When you listen to that poem being spoken by Cliff Peyrefitte, our current student, you image a mosaic, and when you look at the images of what the students produced, you see a mosaic of thoughts and ideas. And you realize that each person brings a different idea. And that to me is worth celebrating."

Since 2015, the SJC History Club has hosted over thirty talks and encounters with special guests. Dajeel Taan is being developed to record and share the content of presentations via a YouTube channel.
