posted (September 19, 2019)

13 UWI students received scholarships today to continue their studies. It is part of what is called the Global Giving Scholarship Bursaries. We dropped by the ceremony this morning to find out how meaningful this financial help will be to the students:

Sharmayne Saunders - Acting Head, UWI
"So 3 years ago we started the Global Giving Scholarship Bursary Award and basically a lot of the funds come from philanthropic donations and also fundraising that the university puts off, additionally we have some donors to the program who have specific scholarship offerings that they do for example we have the Janet Williams Scholarship Bursary and that one is specifically for students pursuing a Bachelor's in Accounting. Our scholarship is for an academic year so at the start of the semester students can apply, the application form is available to all enrolled students and the form speaks specifically to your academic merit so you have maintain a GPA of over 2.5 and also you have to demonstrate that you do a lot of community service and you know that is a challenge for our students because they are all working adults."

"The program offerings are really at the top end of the financial status, we want to encourage students to join us because we understand that they have an opportunity to select higher education from other institutions including those online institutions that are consortiums in the US and UK and it always boils down to the cost."

Paul Alexander Norales - Post Graduate Diploma Student, Leadership and Management
"I am a proud homeowner and with all the bills I have to pay with this scholarship I am able to maintain my bills and also maintain the excellence that the school is known for."

Jules Vasquez
"So now what is the quantum of funds you have received and what are you authorized to use it for?"

Paul Alexander Norales
"For this semester my tuition and bills come up to $3,100 so I have been awarded $1500 this year so with that I have $1500 to pay which I will be able to."

The awards range from $1,500 to $5,000. All bursaries are awarded on Academic Merit/Performance and extra-curricular activities like community service.
