KHMH Celebrates Birthday With BBQ
posted (September 20, 2019)
As we told you earlier this week, the mighty KHMH is 24 years old. Today they celebrated with a staff competition which was about skewers, not scalpels.

It was a Bar-B-Q cookout in which doctors, nurses, and support staff formed teams to grill the perfect cut of meat.

We're not sure what that has to do with healing the sick, but it sounded like a chance to score some free food so the media stopped by to judge for ourselves. We spoke to the hospital's C.E.O and PR manager about how the hospital has grown and evolved in 24 years:

Michelle Hoare, C.E.O. KHMH Authority
"24 years of service is a lot, and looking at the years of contribution and dedication that the staff has, you know, they are the ones that made all this possible in terms of moving the hospital to where we are today. We've been working very hard as a team and every year as we celebrate our anniversary we use it as an opportunity to bring staff together to build teams and have then unite and participate together."

Tylon Tillet, PR Manager, KHMH
"As the interpersonal violence within the City is on the rise we are the vanguards of the public's health every time somebody gets shot every time there's an RTA we are here for this city and this country twenty-four-seven. Like I always tell people the KHMH is two villages operating twenty-four-seven making sure everyone is taken care of. So it's 24 years of dedicated service making sure that everyone stays alive."

Michelle Hoare, C.E.O. KHMH Authority
"This is our 24th anniversary staff Bar-B-Q cookout. It's a competition among groups so different staff representing different groups come together and their cooking up they're displaying their talent. We will have a judging of the Bar-B-Q and may the best one win."

"It's just an opportunity to appreciate our staff and let them know that together anything is possible."

Cherisse Halsall:
"What are some of the hospitals greatest achievements in these 24 years?"

Michelle Hoare, C.E.O. KHMH Authority
"Oh there are so many, structurally we were able to expand our services, we've introduced adult and pediatric neonatal intensive care units for the hospital. We've upgraded our emergency services, we've upgraded our labour and delivery service, our surgical services, and for this year the 24th anniversary we were able to upgrade our waiting area for the accident and emergency waiting room."

"Those are some of the structural improvements that people can see. Behind the scenes we've been working on building systems and strengthening our work processes. Upgrading staff and doing different things that benefit not only the employer but the employees as well."

The physiotherapy staff ultimately won the cookoff. They'll have to defend their title at next year's cookout.
