Accused Murderer Free After 7 Years on Remand
posted (September 30, 2019)
He's been on remand for 7 years awaiting trial, but tonight the 28-year-old accused murderer, Kenyon Dominguez is home free. That's after he was acquitted today in the courtroom of Justice Colin Williams.

Dominguez was the man who the police charged for the murder of 24-year-old Keith Lewis. At around 6 p.m. on June 11, 2012, Lewis and 3 other men were socializing on Roches Street in Belize City. That's when a gunman approached from the direction of McKoy Boulevard. He fired a barrage of gunshots at the group and escaped quickly from the scene. Lewis' other 3 companions reacted fast enough, and they managed to escape the shooting without any injury.

Unfortunately, no one checked on Lewis, and it was not until the following day that area residents found his body. He succumbed to gunshot wounds to the chest, the back, and the legs.

Crown Counsel Shanice Lovell called her main prosecution witness, who claimed to police that he was an eyewitness to Lewis' murder. He even named Dominguez as the gunman in a written statement back in 2012. When he took the stand in the trial, however, he told the court that he couldn't identify the shooter.

The Crown Counsel then applied to the court to treat him as a hostile witness, but Justice Williams refused the application. The judge also refused to have his written statement from 2012 entered as evidence in the case. When the witness left the stand, the Crown Counsel closed her case.

Shortly after that, Dominguez's attorney, Kareem Musa, made a no-case submission, asserting that the prosecution failed to prove their case against him.

The judge agreed, and upheld that submission, acquitting Dominguez. He was allowed to leave court a free man.
