Reckless Driver Found Guilty of Causing Two Men’s Deaths
posted (October 1, 2019)
Tonight, 28 year-ole Eaton Belisle, a bus driver from St. Paul's Bank Village, is on remand at the Belize Central Prison. He's there awaiting a sentencing hearing after he was convicted of 2 counts of manslaughter by negligence in the courtroom of Justice Colin Williams.

The incident happened on the evening of August 14th, 2015. Belisle was driving a white Mercedes, and he was heading home. When he arrived at an area between miles 6 and 7 on the Philip Goldson Highway, he was attempting to overtake 2 vehicles in front of him. But, he ended up in the lane of a white pick-up truck coming from the opposite direction. That vehicle was being driven by Yuan Sheng He, and he had 2 men in the pan of the pickup truck: 55-year-old Alden Lock, and 34-year-old Shane Goff. When the two vehicles collided head-on, both Lock and Goff suffered severe head and bodily injuries and they died.

2 witnesses told the court that Belisle was speeding, and evidence came out in court that Belisle attempted to overtake these 2 vehicles around a curve. In his defense, he gave a dock statement asserting that at vehicle swerved into his lane and that the fatal accident was not his fault. He also told the court that he was sorry for the loss of life.

But, a jury of 4 men and 4 women deliberated for about 2 hours, and when they emerged, they announced to the court that they had found him guilty of both offenses.

Justice Williams remanded him to the prison until Wednesday, October 9th, when his attorney, Leeroy Banner, will be allowed to make a mitigation plea on his behalf. The prosecution will also provide an impact statement for the judge to consider when coming up with an appropriate sentence for the conviction.
