And Now, The Birds?
posted (October 3, 2019)

And, in another bit of odd environmental news….

Birds falling from the sky to their deaths sounds like a scene from a horror movie or even a bad omen. And well, it’s the Halloween season so it’s not so far-fetched right? …Not quite, but, seriously, let’s not get ahead of ourselves or get spooked that quickly â€" an Orange Walk resident did report that he found several dead birds in his yard, he even saw a few foaming from their beaks, but he was not sure what was causing it. Our collegues at CTV-3 interviewed the resident and here is his account off camera:

Voice of Residence
"It was a regular morning, I got up and I noticed right in front of my door, there were 2 of them. So I said, maybe someone shot down the birds and nobody noticed and then my daughter walked outside and she said she noticed a couple more. So I walked out and we walked all over the yard and we came across 6 of them. So, I disposed of the birds, I put them in several plastic bags and disposed of them and then I went for work, I didn't think anything of it at the time. Then for lunch I came home and then they said they keep on seeing the birds and they actually video one that fell just from the tree and it was foaming and after a few seconds it died. That added to 12 birds for the entire day that we found in the yard, all over the yard. If somebody was shooting down, we ruled that out, so maybe someone is poisoning the birds, it has been the first time and it's a bit strange, I don't really know what to say about it."

When we asked Environment Ministry CEO Dr. Percival Cho about the report via text he said there is no apparent cause identified. The birds may have eaten some poison set for dogs and died in their roost.
