That prominent name in the north, "VEGA" was briefly in the news today. That's because a member of the Vega family, reportedly a nephew of the Deputy Prime Minister was caught in a vehicle with contraband. Police stopped the vehicle on the Pachakan road and reportedly found 3 cases of whisky and 10 cases of beer inside - all uncustomed goods.
Vega and Armando Castillo, customs broker for Vega Distributors were inside the vehicle. Castillo claimed ownership and, as is standard in these cases, agreed to an out of court settlement and an undisclosed fine.
Castillo paid the fine this morning, and the matter disposed of, meaning only a temporary embarrassment for the Vega nephew.
The Pachakan road is a major smuggling hub.
