Hulse Eager To Take Sugar Issue to COTED Trade
posted (October 18, 2019)
And while those citrus growers are facing difficult choices, as we told you last night, the fortunes of the sugar industry - which have been sagging for years - are looking up, just a little.

That's after rounds of meeting with CARICOM minister of Agriculture were held in Belize earlier this month. Coming out of that, the plan is to take three major pro sugar proposals from the COTED Agriculture meeting which was held in Belize to the COTED Trade Ministers meeting which is being held in Guyana next month for their final approval.

Hulse says CARICOM should work like a domestic market for sugar producers:

Hon. Godwin Hulse, Minister of Agriculture
"The way CARICOM was designed, single market, it makes a bigger Belize. That's what it is and the same way that you don't need no permission to sell sugar from Corozal to PG, from the Guatemalan border to the cayes, the same with CARICOM. We should be able to trade this commodity freely within the region and we are supposed to protect it within the region. B.S.I./ASR as you know has up their game tremendously. I mean you are not too young to remember when you use to have lumps in the sugar. They now refine sugar better."
