COMPOL Outlines Protocol For Dealing With Mentally Ill Suspect
posted (October 23, 2019)
And while Jaime Marin remains in police custody, there are concerns regarding whether a jail cell is an appropriate location for him given his reported delicate state of mental health.

Earlier today the commissioner walked us through the steps that will have to be taken before Jaime Marin can be charged with either murder or manslaughter in the stabbing death of his cousin Issac.

Chester Williams, Commissioner of police
"We, the police are no in a position to say who has mental health issues. That is a profession that is foreign to us. We would have to rely on the expert opinion from those persons who were trained in those areas, but we can say that of late we have seen a number of those incidences where people are saying that the perpetrator has some mental health issue i.e. the incident in Caye Caulker a couple days ago."

"It is an unfortunate situation, and it is one we are working through the ministry of health to see how they can help us to do the relevant evaluation, write the relevant report, and once that is done then we will then forward the file to the DPP and the DPP is going to make the determination as to whether or not we're going to charge for murder manslaughter or whatever the case may be."

"It is a situation that again is unfortunate, but something needs to be done to see how we can address it and I would want to implore upon families who do have people that exhibit mental health issues that they try to seek medical attention for them to be able to keep them at a state where they will not act out because when they fail to take the medication then you'll see that they begin to act out, and it could reach dire stages and we don't want that to occur."

We'll let you know when he is charged.
