Commissioner Says Major Crimes Going Down, But Much More Needs Be Done

We met the Commissioner of Police Chester Williams in Belmopan today at the Training Academy with all commanders from formations countrywide. They gathered at the Belmopan Training Academy for the quarterly Computer Statistics Briefing, known as COMSTAT.

They discussed the crime figures for the last quarter of the year and how they will bolster their collective response to crime. Now as it relates to the numbers so far, Commissioner Chester Williams says that while crime in the west is up. Nationwide things are going "somewhat well."

So to wrap up the figures, murder as the end of September is down by 16% - with 19 fewer murders - compared to the same period last year. The number robberies reported was down 10%, reported burglaries were down 8%, while reports of theft were down 22%.

Commissioner Willams also highlighted the social issue of alcohol consumption which he says is the leading cause of death in our nation. He says he has told his commanders that he wants them to go after 'liquor establishments' that are conducting activities of ill repute and eroding the fabric of society.
