Mentally Ill Man Charged for Murder
posted (October 24, 2019)

On Monday we told you about the stabbing death in Caye Caulker. It happened in the residence located below “I and Iâ€￾ bar when an altercation ensued between a mentally ill man and his cousins, one of whom died from the injuries.

And, today - notwithstanding his mental state - 28 year old Jaime Marin was charged for the murder of his 17 year old cousin, and the attempted murder of another cousin.

We spoke to his attorney, Hurl Hamilton, at court today - and he said that while is client has been remanded to the Belize Central prison there should be an alternative facility to house accused persons who are mentally ill:

Hurl Hamilton - Attorney at Law
"My client the defendant Jaime Patrick Marin he has been arraigned 4 charges: one count of murder, one count of attempted murder, one count of dangerous harm, and one count of use of deadly means of harm. The issue of his mental capability came up and while there is nothing concrete from a medical practitioner as you are aware that the police is treating the matter as a mental issue. I have been instructed by the father of the defendant he indeed is a mentally challenged individual. What the defense wanted was for him to be housed in an alternative location other than Colby foundation. Unfortunately, regrettably, there isn’t such a place. At this stage for murder you can’t get bail at the Supreme Court. I assume the police are going to get further directives from the DPP office and whatever is the outcome of those directives perhaps there is a possibility for bail but let’s wait and see. The magistrate ordered a psychiatric evaluation and I would assume that it is to determine whether he is fit to stand trial whenever that day comes."

Jaime Marin’s next hearing is scheduled for January 8th in San Pedro.

A post mortem examination found that 17 year old Isaac Marin died of a stab wound to the chest.
