Senate Meets to Prepare Brexit Contingency
posted (October 25, 2019)
There was a Special Sitting of the Senate in Belmopan today, and to our recollection, it was probably one of their shortest, finished in less than an hour. But, that doesn't make it any less important than any of the Senate's usual business.

The Barrow Administration went to the Senate to pass a resolution authorizing the ratification by Belize of the Economic Partnership Agreement, between the CARIFORUM States and the United Kingdom of Britain and Northern Ireland Motion, 2019. That's a mouthful, but basically, Belize and the other Caribbean nations want to ensure that trade between them and the UK is not disrupted due to their Brexit.

It is uncertain if and when the UK will leave the European Union - which is dubbed Brexit. But, these Caribbean nations don't want the severing of ties between these two to cause delays with one of their biggest trading partners.

So, that's why this new trade agreement has been entered into, and today, the Senate made it into law. We asked the Leader of government business to explain more:

According to Hulse, this motion ensures business as usual, no matter what decision the UK finally makes.
