He became a household name in the worst possible way - as a “malpago,â€￾ and Joshua Perdomo’s name was dragged through the mud as a national scandal.

Well, tonight, it’s over. Perdomo has paid back the student bond that caused his family so much agony and embarrassment. Government today sent out a revenue collectors’ receipt confirming the receipt of payment. 

And, his father, Cabinet secretary Carlos Perdomo issued a personal statement saying, quote, 

“…the bond has been paid in full.

At the time of the signing of the bond many years ago, it was expected that it would be repaid if the terms of the agreement were not fulfilled.  With this in mind, my family thought it was the right thing to do.  We regret that this situation ever arose.â€￾  End quote. 

And surely so does the UDP, which has been hemorrhaging scarce political capital ever since the write-off was introduced in the House of Representatives two months ago.  And, even with the repayment, it is likely not going to stop - because what has been paid is the principal - and critics are likely to ask where are the interest or late penally payments.
