Gapi Vega, Call It A Comeback?
posted (November 4, 2019)
And the larger crowd followed their divisional leaders: we mean the standard bearers and area reps who have declared their support for Saldivar.

As you saw, that included a very prominent Gaspar Vega. The Orange Walk North Representative was said to have been retiring from electoral politics. He hasn't been to a house meeting in many months, and has receded into the political shadows.

But, he re-emerged on Sunday - reportedly as a financier and a Saldivar supporter. We asked Saldivar if the tarnished figure would make a comeback under his leadership of the UDP - and he was vague about Vega:

Reporter
"You have Gaspar Vega on you flyer of the 21, is he coming back as a standard bearer for the next election?"

Hon. John Saldivar
"That is not what he is saying. That is saying that he as an area representative and the person controlling the Orange Walk North constituency he is on my team."

Reporter
"We know that there is a vacancy in Orange Walk North, Homero has stepped aside, will you be running for Orange Walk North?"

Hon. Gaspar Vega, Area Rep., OW North
"I really don't know that yet."

Reporter
"When will you know? I mean elections is coming in a year."

Hon. Gaspar Vega
"The people will decide that."

Reporter
"Are you interested in re-entering electoral politics?"

Hon. Gaspar Vega
"Am considering."

Reporter
"Will you do it if John Saldivar is elected leader?"

Hon. Gaspar Vega
"I will do it if my people ask me to do it."

Reporter
"Orange Walk North, PUP feels they have it safe now, Monchi Cervantes won a lot of village councils they say and you cannot come back."

Hon. Gaspar Vega
"I think he won almost all."

Reporter
"What they are saying is that it's too late, you can't come back."

Hon. Gaspar Vega
"We'll see."
