Vaca Volumes, Water Rushes Into Succotz
posted (November 4, 2019)
There was some heavy flooding in San Jose Succotz early this morning around 5:00. And it happened after the Vaca Dam had to be opened and warning of flash floods were issued.

A public notice from BECOL this morning said quote, "the Vaca Dam spillway became active this morning and some flash flooding maybe possible down stream. Residents in the area are asked to be on the alert."

For the villagers not even their church was safe - and parishioners had to rush to protect the instruments.

This video shows a nearby home overrun with chest high waters. One of the family members told PLUS TV the water rushed into the house as a result of their neighbor's big wall:

Flood Victim
"Last night it was terrible. The water was at least up to here. It's the third time that this happened. It was flooded all the way into the bedrooms, the kitchen, restroom - the bed was under water, sofas, stove, freezer - everything was under water. As you can see it was a total disaster last night."

"From around 1:30 in the morning until right now, we are still up."

Reporter
"Now this is the third time, what do you guys see as the main contributor to this flooding in this particular property?"

Flood Victim
"The main contributor would be the wall on that side. We have had floods before, but it had never been this bad. Until they built the wall, that is when we started having this kind of damages."

Reporter
"You're saying the wall is stopping the water from flowing?"

Flood Victim
"The last time it got flooded we couldn't accomplish anything with the neighbor and the wall. My dad decided that it would be a good idea to put this wall to prevent the water from coming in. In this case this time it didn't help in anything. The water just flows right on top and flooded the house."

There were also reports of mudslides between Succotz and Benque and culverts were overrun.

The waters also flooded the highway heading into Succotz causing buses, cars and cargo vehicles to be delayed.

But, by this afternoon, the waters had receded and are swollen but within the banks right now.

The falling is a result of the dam, but also heavy rain in the region and waters rushing down from Guatemala.
