Powering El Progresso, Cayo
posted (November 4, 2019)
Many of us take electricity for granted. For instance, we flick the light switch on without a thought and sometimes probably don't bother to take off the light or fan when we leave the room. Well, El Progresso villagers out west never had that luxury. They had been without electricity for decades, that is until Friday when they finally got hooked up to the grid. Here is more from the celebratory ceremony.

Other villages nearby such as Buena Vista and La Gracia have electricity as well.

CITCO's Slow Work On Swing Bridge

Three more weeks, that's how long it will take before the Belize City Council re-opens the western pedestrian crosswalk on the swing bridge.

A rare release from the council says that the bridge has, quote, "serious structural issues" and when they pulled up the walkway, they found, major deterioration throughout and urgent repairs became more extensive.

The release says, quote, "While we anticipated that the pedestrian walkway would have been reopened by now, we will not do so until all technical tests show that it is completely safe for us to do so."

The release notes, quote, "Pedestrians have taken to crossing at the top of the bridge which is exceptionally dangerous and strictly prohibited."

The council, which has been criticized for a lack of transparency has not said how much the works will cost or who is the contractor.

Compton's Contribution

And finally, tonight, we note the passing of Compton Fairweather, a noted record producer, and super patriot. The 88 year old died this morning of bronchial pneumonia at Belize Medical Associates.

Fairweather was a passionate student fo the Guatemalan claims and an advocate of going to the ICJ.

His greatest contribution will be noted as the owner, engineer and producer for CES records, the New York Based Belizean imprint which recorded many of the seminal Belizean records of the 70's including classics by the Professionals and the Lord Rhaburn Combo as well as Mass in Blues by Frankie Reneau.

Tomorrow, we'll revisit his legacy as a music producer.

His wife tells us that he be given an official funeral by order of the Prime Minister. No date has been set for this yet.
