A Decade Later, Still No Justice For Buckley
posted (November 5, 2019)
The last time that Steven Buckley made the news was back in January of 2018. That's when he was calling for the state to speed up the criminal prosecution of the cop who was charged for almost killing him.

That happened in April of 2010. Buckley was accidentally shot by a police officer during a routine search. That officer has been identified as Inspector Dennis Lopez.

Buckley came to our office today to complain that he has seen Lopez back on the job for the police department even though the case for attempted murder and dangerous harm is still unresolved. He expressed his outrage about that:

Steven Buckley - Shot by Police
"The Policeman is working in Orange Walk."

Reporter
"The one who shot you?"

Steven Buckley
"The one who shot me, the policeman who shot me. He's working in Orange Walk, and he's not supposed to be working. He's supposed to wait until the case is finished. He's supposed to be on interdiction until the case is done. The case isn't finished yet, and he is already working."

Reporter
"How do you know this?"

Steven Buckley
"Because the other day, I took a walk. I was going to Corozal to visit my people, and I met him coming out of the station."

Reporter
"It could have been that he was just visiting that station. Do you know for certain?"

Steven Buckley
"I know for certain that it is there that he is working right now. A lot of people meet me, and they told me that this man is working."

Reporter
"But that's hearsay as well though, sir."

Steven Buckley
"Well, I don't go by hearsay. I go by what I saw with my two eyes."

Reporter
"What's the latest with your case, as far as you're aware?"

Steven Buckley
"As far as I am aware, the farthest I know about it is that they took it to Belmopan, and from the time they took it to Belmopan, I haven't heard any more about it."

Reporter
"What do you mean you haven't heard anything about it. Aren't there any adjournments? You haven't been told?"

Steven Buckley
"I haven't even been told about any adjournments or nothing."

"What I want to explain to the people is, people were saying that I was partying. I wasn't partying."

Reporter
"What do you mean by that? With the money that the Government gave you, the first part?"

Steven Buckley
"The first little amount of money that they said they gave me, they say I was partying. I owed people. So, I paid off the people I owed. Right now I still end up owing."

To clarify, Inspector Lopez is the Deputy Commander of the Corozal Police Station. Police Commissioner Chester Williams announced his promotion in September of this year, and he was challenged by the press on it. In response, he said that Lopez has been waiting on interdiction for over 10 years, and that this delay was unfair to him.
