Move Over COACH, Say Hi To “Fahina” Handbags
posted (November 5, 2019)
We may know them primarily as a conservation group, but the Sarstoon Temash Institute for Indigenous Management (SATIIM) has qualified for a $130,000 US dollar grant from the CDB's Cultural and Creative Industries Innovation Fund.

SATIIM is working along with a Toledo women's group called 'Fahina'. Fahina has been around for many years and the women make handbags, jewelry and other handcrafts from local materials. The grant money will be used to train these women to create more standardized and high-quality products and eventually mainstream their products in Belize. The main objective of this project is to create a source of economic empowerment to Mayan women in the south through artisanship. Executive Director of SATIIM told us more about the significance of this grant.

This is the first time SATIIM has applied for this grant. 3 other projects in the Caribbean also received grants.
