Raging River Swept Away BWSL Infrastructure
posted (November 6, 2019)
For the past two nights, we've been reporting on the flash flood in San Jose Succotz and Benque Viejo. It affected 400 persons in those communities - but that wasn't the full extent of it.

The raging river also damaged BWSL equipment downstream in the Macal river and knocked out water supply to San Ignacio, Santa Elena and Esperanza.

Production wells on the river were washed away when the riverbank was also swept away in the fast raging waters.

BWSL says those wells had held up very well under higher flood water previously - but this time the water had high velocity - and washed the bank away.

But, the good news is that after two tough days, water has been restored for the majority of customers. Some customers in the higher areas may still be experiencing water shortages or low pressure.

But, residents in San Ignacio, Santa Elena, Esperanza, Benque Viejo and Succotz are still being urged to boil water before drinking or consuming.

During the supply disruption, the Belmopan City Council, the Fire Service, and the San Ignacio Santa Elena Town Council trucked water to those in critical need.

Still, the PUP said in a statement, quote, "Many schools on Tuesday, either suspended classes or shortened the school hours due to the water shortage. BWS must do better than this. It must!"
