Faber Says Vega Perception Will Hurt Party
posted (November 8, 2019)
But Faber is worrying about the possible re-emergence of Gaspar Vega as a candidate for the UDP. The Orange Walk North representative seems to be flirting with the possibility of a comeback - and was in the front row at the recent John Saldivar convention. Now, he's not currently the standard bearer; in fact, there is none after Dr. Homero Novelo stepped down two months ago.

So will Vega step up? Well, even he refused to answer that question. But, Deputy Leader Faber says, if he does, he would have a problem with it:...

"He has not made a commitment but that if Saldivar ascends, he might be interested. We know it's a vacant seat."

Hon. Patrick Faber - Aspirant, UDP Leader
"It is a matter I think which the party will need to discuss and I will tell you honestly that we've had zero discussion about return of Gaspar Vega in the official levels of the party."

"So all that has been - and you have interviewed Mr Vega - is speculation in my view - I don't know."

"But I can tell you what my view is. and my view is based on what is seen. And what I get from the perception of the larger Belizean population. That there is an element of perceived corruption, a huge element of perceived corruption on the part of Mr Vega, and that if the UDP wishes to signal to the wider voter population in this country that we're about zero tolerance for corruption then it would be wise, in my view, for the party not to go down that route."

"But that is just my individual opinion. And I want to make that clear, because ultimately if the party makes a decision and views something in a different way and the democratic process of our party is adhered to, then maybe, well, we might say well say that we might need the seat, Mr Vega might be able to win the seat in Orange Walk North. But, if you want to quote me and you want to put me on the record, my vote in that regard would be absolutely not."
