UDP Candidate for Freetown OJ Elrington and the Belize City Council are in a squabble over a basketball court - and like those elephants when they fight - only those who want to shoot hoops are being harmed.
Elrington was the first to strike last night accusing the council of quote, "waging war against the youths of Freetown." In a Facebook post, he accused them of "removing the back boards and rims from a community park so a community basketball tournament cannot be played." He called it, quote, "petty, infantile, and utterly disgusting."
Well, tonight the City Council is pointing the finger right back at Elrington. The council calls Elrington immature and stresses that Elrington did not request the use of the basketball court as required.
They say he is the one who took down the rims and backboards, and accuse him of plastering the court with graffiti by putting his logo on it.
A huffy release from the council says, quote, "we will not be bullied or side lined when it comes to safeguarding the assets of the city….We frown on having to expend our energy to address trivial political tantrums by aspiring politicians who continue to use the public's assets like it's their personal property." " End quote.
