posted (November 11, 2019)
If you are a super fan of food network cooking competitions, any cooking channel or just a food lover, you will know the joy and excitement that comes from watching how chefs turn basic ingredients into delicious, creative masterpieces. Well, the Belize Tourism Industry Association is hoping to WOW the Belizean and tourist clientele by training chefs from all over the country in advanced culinary techniques. The training is being held at the ITVET and we dropped by this morning for the theory session.

John Burgos, Executive Director, BTIA
"What you see happening this week is that this is something we began to discuss with the Mexican Ambassador here in Belize where we were looking to find better opportunities to provide training to our local industry service members so we signed an MOU last year and through them we were able to partner with a training institute in Quintana Roo, this institute provide all the training to hotels, resorts, restaurants from Cancun to Playa Del Carmen, Tulum, even Bacalar and Chetumal so this is only advanced culinary training so what we are looking at over the next 3 days is a 20 hour training program, one day is theory just a little refresher on certain areas, you know some of the serve safe techniques, how to prevent cross contamination, how to properly organize your kitchen."

"Another thing that he is going to be showing is plating, how best to, if you are going to be doing a rice and beans, how best you can do that, if you are going to be doing a soup, how best you can do that, if you are going to be doing a ceviche, how best you can present that so he will just show them techniques, he is also going to be focused on an area called signature chef which each chef you show the techniques but you give it your own flavor."

There are about 25 chefs participating. The practical sessions will be held tomorrow and Wednesday. Burgos says the BTIA will be providing a wide range or training next year. If you would like to attend the training or find out more you can call their office at 227-1144.
