Disaster Response For Public Officers
posted (November 11, 2019)
Many say you can never really be fully prepared for a sudden tragic event or disaster but that does not mean you shouldn't do all you possibly can to protect yourself and others. That is the idea behind NEMO's 3-day training at the ITVET. Over 60 public officers are being trained in disaster response techniques. Here is more from this morning's session.

Kevin Pollard, District Coordinator, NEMO
"It is a basic first aid training as you know that normally we have public officers in the shelters and this training is to assist in the event that something was to happen within the shelter, they can assist before we get additional assistance."

"We have from Belize Tax Services, we have the post office, we have customs, we have from city council, even from the police department because we have police officers at the shelters as well so therefore these people would be the first responders."

Courtney Weatherburne:
"What are some of the main tips or themes you guys are discussing or will be discussing over the next 3 days?"

Kevin Pollard
"Like CPR, we are doing different injuries, how to deal with different injuries within, like if you get a broken arm if someone comes into the shelter and they cant breathe, you know how to assist them, even with drowning, how to revive that person and bring them back, give them CPR, the proper way of doing CPR, how to turn the person over so they can start breathing 2:37 properly."

"It is very important because, not only for the sake of being in a disaster but we don't ever know when we will have a disaster, it could be on your work site and if you know how to respond, well whenever we have this first aid training, it is something you can take with you, it is not a one day thing, just okay you come, take this training and that's it, no this is something that will be with you forever, especially if you pay attention and you can on the work site, you could be driving and someone is injured and you know who to assist."

The six month Atlantic hurricane season ends on Nov. 30th.
