posted (November 12, 2019)
The 2019 CXC results are out, and a stealer trio of brilliant Belizean students have performed exceptionally on the CSEC exams. Edward P. York's Alexis Guy earned the top spot and was named the Most Outstanding Candidate. Guy obtained seventeen Grade I's and one Grade II.

Not far behind her are hers schoolmates, also from EP Yorke: Dayana Marroquin the Outstanding Candidate, attained fourteen Grade I's and two Grade II's; andAngie Matute who was awarded Most Outstanding performance in Technical Vocation in the region.

We spoke to all three students today about their successes and how their teachers helped them along the way.

Cherisse Halsall:
"When you took the exam could you have ever imagined that this would have been the result?"

Alexis Guy, Most Outstanding Candidate, 2019 CSEC Examinations
"Honestly, no, Never."

Cherisse Halsall:
"How do you feel have gotten the highest marks?"

Alexis Guy
"Um I guess happy because all the hard work paid off but still in a way overwhelmed and, you know, I can't believe it's happening."

"It's something that they, the teachers and the administration motivated us to have inner self-motivation. The teachers they were amazing because everything that they did, having extra classes with us it came out of their own free time. Everything was free of cost for us."

"So basically a lot of extra time we had classes during lunch sometimes just for 10 minutes during break time, after school, during the week and sometimes we would be at school all day Saturday with three different classes on a Saturday."

"My mom is proud, I can say she's more excited than me."

"I'm in 6th form I'm going to John Paul II Jr. College in Beque and I'm majoring in English."

"My plan is to study further and right now my goal I am working toward becoming a lawyer in Environmental protection."

Cherisse Halsall:
"And why environmental law?"

Alexis Guy
"For me the environment is something I'm very passionate about."

"As long as I could remember I just, when I was in first form I actually joined Oceana wave makers and we'd do different stuff like cleaning up and campaigns against offshore oil drilling and just different conferences that they would have to educate the general public and us as wavemakers as well."

Cherisse Halsall:
"Any Advice for students taking the exam this year?"

Alexis Guy
"I would say for them to just have confidence in themselves and to be prepared but also remember to find time to have fun and spend time with their family and friends because if you work too much you'll get stressed out and you'll be overwhelmed and you won't be able to focus on your examinations. And just know that if you've been preparing and you've been passing the practice tests you'll do your best and your best is good enough."

Dayana Marroquin, Outstanding Candidate, 2019 CSEC Examination
"I feel very excited and proud of myself that I could have done it. I came in 2nd, its amazing. I didnt think I could make it, but I did."

Cherisse Halsall
"Where you were when you heard that you have got 2nd place?"

Dayana Marroquin
"I was at home when one of my teachers told me that I had come in 2nd place."

Cherisse Halsall
"What was the overall reaction at your house?"

Dayana Marroquin
"Everyone was very happy that I came in 2nd. I guess like they didn't expect it, I was always a top performer in school, but we had a lot of competition and stuff like that. I didn't really expect it myself. It was unbelievable at first."

Cherisse Halsall:
"Tell me what was the most difficult part of last year?"

Dayana Marroquin
"Last year a lot of the SBA's - doing a lot of them staying up all night studying and doing the past papers, the SBA's had a lot to do and like last minute you have to be doing a lot of that. It was very hectic, but I'm glad that its over and I'm glad that I did good."

Cherisse Halsall:
"Tell me about the day that you guys took the exam, how you were feeling?"

Dayana Marroquin
"You going there feeling nervous, like you never really know what will come on the exam, if it's going to be hard or if you're going to remember it, but when you go in there you just try to do your best. A lot of people helped me, my teachers, a lot of encouragement came from them, my parents, and my friends too. Whenever we came together to study it was all of us, not just one person, it was everybody studying together."

"4th form is like, it feels very short because of the CXCs, but preparing for it, it's a lot of work, especially if you're taking a good amount of CXCs. Sometimes you don't get rest at night and you wake and just continue going studying and doing your best."

"At the moment I'm just studying pharmacy at the University of Belize in Belmopan. I just found it interesting because it had a lot of chemistry and lot of things. I always wanted to be in the medical field working and I found that pharmacy was something I really like."

Angie Matute, Most Outstanding Performance in Technical Vocational
"Well it feels like it's a dream. I wasn't expecting to get that high, well i worked hard along with my teachers to get a high grade but I wasn't expecting that."

"It was long and stressful long nights without sleeping, a lot of work, no eating sometimes because I had to use that time to study."

Cherisse Halsall:
"What would you say about the teachers here that prepared you for the exam?"

Angie Matute
"Well, they're amazing they're not just teachers, they are like my second family and everybody's second family although their just supposed to be teaching us they are there to help us when we are down and give us advice, how to study to continue and do our best."

"I usually come and visit them and just say hi. Taking this exam was challenging, but was amazing, because I learn a lot from it and as a student, I'm still a student and I love learning."

These students and 399 others will be recognized at the CXC National Awards Ceremony on Friday, November 29. This year, it will be held at 9:00 a.m. at The Omar Longsworth Auditorium in Independence Village.
